History of “Rancho El Fortín”

It was founded in 1929 when Mr. Maximo McEllis built a ranch in the valley, schools for the workers’ children and began his cattle activities bringing the first batch of Charolaise cattle into America directly from France; at 1200 meters above sea level, between the “Sierra del Orégano” and the “Sierra de Santa Rosa”, in the municipality of San Buenaventura Coahuila, Rancho El Fortín (REF) and its emblematic iron sign of the M are born.

A few years later, Jesús María Ramón Valdés and his father visited the ranch on different occasions and always commented on their love for this land and, in 1988 Chuy María decided to acquire this property. Since then Chuy María and his children have made the ranch a producer of Charolaise cattle and quarter-mile horses of high prestige in Mexico and the United States, but mainly a place of coexistence for the whole family.

Vinícola El Fortín

The history of our vineyard begins in 2007, on a visit to “Rancho El Fortín”, Don Francisco Milmo Madero, owner of Casa Madero, motivates Don Jesús María Ramón Valdés to start his vineyard and offers his advice. In 2008, on the day of his 70th birthday, Chuy María plants the first vine of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape brought from France, his eldest son plants the following and so on; on a semi-desert ranch, at 1200 MASL and 100 km away from the nearest town, begins the history of Vinícola El Fortín, an extension of the Rancho El Fortín brand.

Our promise as a Vineyard has been “To focus on producing high quality wines, above quantity, so that people can enjoy a good wine made in the Coahuila desert.” Said by Don Jesús. Knowing this, as a family we have taken care to give all the importance to each step of the process that goes into making our wines, from the plantation to the bottle.

As of today, our vineyard has six hectares in production and one experimental, among the varieties we produce are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Shiraz. With these varieties, we have achieved five different lines: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, special family selection, 100% Merlot, 100% Malbec, Ensamblaje (70% Cabernet Sauvignon & 30% Shiraz) and finally our Rosé which varies each year according to the harvest. To date we have obtained 4 Gold medals in national and international competitions and one in bronze. Our wines have ranked among the 33 best rated Mexican wines of 2018 as well as our 2018 Rosé, ranking inside the 50 best Mexican wines in its category.

Recently, we have opened our wine cellar in Saltillo for tastings and pairing dinners”, providing a cozy atmosphere, with a tour to see the Rancho El Fortín horses, live music and the family members around to answer any questions, we have managed to attract many new customers who join the experience of tasting the wines of El Fortín.

We invite you to be part of this experience reserving your place and getting to know our products “Proudly produced in Mexico”.

Paleontological Landmark

YEHUECAUCERATOPS MUDEI

Did you know?

It was discovered in the region of Ocampo, Coahuila in 2017, its name means “Ancient horned face of the Museo del Desierto” which is made up of three roots: the Nahuatl word yehuecauh (ancient), the Greek ceratops (horned face) and Mudei, in honor of the museum.

This dinosaur reached 3 meters in length and 1.60 in height.

Nearby, in the Municipality of San Buenaventura, Coahuila between the Sierra del Orégano and the Sierra de Santa Rosa, Vinícola Rancho El Fortín was born, at 1200 meters above sea level where the ideal conditions allow for producing a generous vine that translates into high quality wines.

These same lands, 72 million years ago served as home for the Yehuecauceratops.

”Vinos & Dinos” a wine and paleontological tour which came toghether thanks to the unified efforts between society and government, offers our visitors a unique tourist experience in Mexico.
